He has held senior roles at Biogen and Millennium Pharmaceuticals and was the founding CEO of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals for nearly 20 years, where he led the advancement of RNAi therapeutics. He holds a Ph. D. from the University of Chicago.
John is the son of Greek immigrants and is passionate about supporting the next generation of scientific leaders, establishing a fellowship program at UMass Chan with his wife. He is an active mentor for emerging leaders across the biotechnology industry and serves on the board of several non-profit foundations.
He invented the direct-acting thrombin inhibitor bivalirudin, which was later commercialized as the blockbuster drug ANGIOMAX™.
