He is a staunch advocate for Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), having been instrumental in the early adoption of Linux, including facilitating its first port to a 64-bit architecture alongside Linus Torvalds. People often call him the "godfather of Linux" and a "living Titan" of FOSS.
He has a deep and long-standing connection with Latin America, particularly Brazil, where he has a husband and has co-founded several FOSS and IoT projects. Jon travels extensively, speaking at conferences and consulting with governments worldwide. In his university days, he was active in ROTC, founded the Computer Club, and was on the rifle team.
His nickname, "maddog", was given to him by his students at Hartford State Technical College because of his passionate arguments with the administration.
