Mariya Toneva is a tenure-track faculty member at the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems, where she leads the Bridging AI and Neuroscience (BrAIN) group. A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University (PhD) and Yale University (BS), her research focuses on aligning artificial intelligence with human brain processes for language comprehension.
She recently received a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant for her project "BrainAlign. " This project aims to bring Large Language Models closer to human understanding by directly aligning them with neural activity from the human brain.
