Orhan Firat

Orhan Firat is a Principal Scientist and Director at Google DeepMind, specializing in Large Language Models. He leads the evaluation team for the Gemini program, building on his experience with foundational models like PaLM and GLaM. He holds a PhD from the Université de Montréal via his research at Mila.

Outside of his primary research, Orhan has a diverse range of hands-on interests, including welding, metal sculpture, philosophy, water polo, cycling, and sailing. His professional path is his fourth career, and he remains curious about what a fifth might entail.

He has been leading the evaluation of Googles flagship Gemini AI program since its inception.
