His passion for justice was ignited by the anti-war movement during his college years. He authored a memoir, "TRYING TIMES, " detailing his career fighting for the marginalized. With his wife, he shares a love for different cultures, history, and travel, and he is active with organizations like the ACLU and the National Lawyers Guild.

He worked alongside legendary radical lawyer William Kunstler defending American Indian Movement members involved in the 1973 Wounded Knee Occupation.
