Dr. Aasim Padela is a Professor and Vice Chair of Research in Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is a clinician-bioethicist whose scholarship focuses on the intersection of community health, religion, and bioethics, aiming to advance health equity. He holds an MD from Weill Cornell and an MSc from the University of Michigan.
Born in New York to immigrants from Pakistan, Dr. Padela was raised in a religious household and is deeply connected to his Muslim identity. He has studied classical Arabic and Islamic theology, undertaking fellowships in the US and at Oxford to further this interest. He is a husband and father to four children.
He developed novel mosque-based approaches and tools for studying and intervening on Muslim American health disparities.
