He founded graduate programs at The George Washington University and the University of Texas and holds a Ph. D. from Indiana University. Outside of his direct professional work, Badrul maintains strong ties to his alma mater, Indiana University, from which he holds two degrees. He has also explored the perspectives of global thought leaders, such as Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, on the topic of low-cost digital learning.
He is widely credited with being the first to coin the phrase "Web based instruction" in 1997.
