Robert Waterhouse is the Director of the Environmental Bioinformatics Group at the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics. He develops data science solutions for planetary health, focusing on biodiversity genomics and leading major European and global initiatives. He holds a PhD and a Masters degree from Imperial College London.

His fascination with the interconnections of life began during his childhood on a cattle farm in Eswatini (formerly Swaziland). Growing up surrounded by tropical nature, he developed a deep appreciation for the vast diversity of plant and animal species.

He played a leading role in developing BUSCO, one of the most widely-used software tools for assessing the completeness of genome assemblies.
