Chaowei Xiao is an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Research Scientist at NVIDIAs Autonomous Vehicle Research group. His work focuses on building secure, private, and trustworthy machine learning systems, particularly in the realm of Large Language Models. He earned his bachelors degree from Tsinghua University and his Ph. D. from the University of Michigan.
His research in AI safety was inspired during his Ph. D. studies when he observed an AI model for a self-driving car misread a stop sign, a critical flaw that highlighted the real-world dangers of insecure systems and motivated his career path. He is dedicated to making AI safer and more beneficial for society.
He is a 2024 AI2050 Early Career Fellow by Schmidt Sciences and was part of a team that was a finalist for the prestigious Gordon Bell Prize for their work on AI-driven protein design.
