Dr. Maria Llorente is a distinguished geriatric psychiatrist serving as the Deputy Assistant Under Secretary for Health at the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs. She oversees national patient care services, including mental health and geriatrics. A professor at Georgetown University, she is board-certified in general psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, and addiction medicine.
Born in Cuba and raised in Miami, her career path was inspired at age 16 by the film "Captain Newman, M. D. , " which sparked her desire to work as a psychiatrist with veterans. She has dedicated her career to this mission, still actively treating veterans with complex psychiatric diagnoses.
She was recently honored with the 2023 John D. Chase Award for Executive Excellence in Health Care for her significant leadership and contributions to veteran services, including her role in implementing the PACT Act.
